St. John the Evangelist's Day.

Merciful Lord, before Thy shrine Thy Church is humbly bending: Let Thy bright beams of mercy shine, light through the darkness sending. Light through Thine own Evangel shone: hear our faint cries beseeching: That light may shine the Church upon by all his holy teaching. The doctrine of St. John so blessed, once on Thy breast reclining, In love his teaching ever drest, Thy love in love divining. Thus walk we then, in truth’s bright light, love in our hearts enshrining, Upon our souls who seek aright Thy light in brightness shining. Lord Jesus Christ, O not in vain Thy Church shall still be bending; Thou art the Light, give us to attain the light of life unending.

1 Merciful Lord, before Thy shrine
Thy Church is humbly bending:
Let Thy bright beams of mercy shine,
light through the darkness sending.
2 Light through Thine own Evangel shone:
hear our faint cries beseeching:
That light may shine the Church upon
by all his holy teaching.
3 The doctrine of St. John so blessed,
once on Thy breast reclining,
In love his teaching ever drest,
Thy love in love divining.
4 Thus walk we then, in truth’s bright light,
love in our hearts enshrining,
Upon our souls who seek aright
Thy light in brightness shining.
5 Lord Jesus Christ, O not in vain
Thy Church shall still be bending;
Thou art the Light, give us to attain
the light of life unending.

St. John the Evangelist's Day.

Merciful Lord, we beseech thee to cast thy bright beams of light upon thy Church, that it being enlightened by the doctrine of thy blessed Apostle the Evangelist St. John, may so walk in the light of thy truth, that it may at length attain to the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
