St. Simon & St. Jude.
1 |
Almighty God, Thy wondrous might, oft as we view the starry skies, in shining characters of light is traced before our earthdimmed eyes; the night, the day proclaim Thy love, declare Thy order and Thy pow’r; and we Thy ceaseless bounty prove, as changing seasons blessings show’r. |
2 |
Not thus alone, O God most high! Hast Thou for man streched forth Thine hand; Thou in Thy Church hast drawn him nigh, the Church Almighty Wisdom planned. “Builded of God,” by love divine, the Lord Himself chief cornerstone, while Prophets and Apostles shine, jewelled foundations Thou wilt own. |
3 |
May Thy Church form those streets of gold, those pearly gates of purest sheen, be in the jasper walls enrolled, and in the light transparent seen. Can such a holy temple rise from stones in such disorder cast, where wilfulness with riot vies, as autumn leaves in wintry blast? |
4 |
O wise to order, strong to guide! Though man may rage, yet Thou art God; mighty to stem his surging pride, Almighty Thy correcting rod. O Lord our God! Thy power reveal; suffer us not to tempt Thine arm; let love our fierce divisions heal, scater each prejudiced alarm. |
5 |
May we as that blest building rise, in order, grace, and unity, erected by the builder wise, a temple sanctified by Thee. By Thee, great God, most Holy, Just, accepted in Thine endless love, through Jesus Christ our only trust, and owned by Thee in heaven above. |

Tune | St. Alphege Joseph Barnby (1838-1896) |
O Almighty God, who hast built thy Church upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the head corner-stone; grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their doctrine, that we may be made an holy temple acceptable unto thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
