The Second Collect at Evening Prayer.
O God, Who dost our thoughts inspire
with every holy, pure desire!
Thou, Who art only good and wise,
in Whom the depth of knowledge lies:
From Whom alone just works proceed,
O make us just in will and deed!
In peace divine grant us to live
that peace the world can never give.
That our hearts may be set to obey
Thy will and word, and keep Thy way,
that ever trusting Thy defense
from every foeman’s proud pretense,
We cease from earthborn pleasures’ quest,
and pass our time in quiet rest,
through Jesus Christ, our Savior Lord,
now and forevermore adored.

plainsong, Mode 8
O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
