First Sunday in Lent.

O Lord, Who fasted for our sake for forty nights and days, our wondering souls to love awake Thy holy name to praise. The noontide sun, the darkling night for us didst Thou endure; fasting didst counter Satan’s might with word and deed most pure. Give grace to use such abstinence, our faith we may subdue unto Thy Spirit’s influence to subject us anew. Thy godly motions to obey in righteousness and peace, to glorify Thy name alway, let not our efforts cease. Lord Jesus, Who dost live and reign with Father, Spirit blest, do Thou our righteousness ordain, and sway each contrite breast, that we may ever glorify and honor Thy strong name, Thou Holy Blessed Trinity, from age to age the same.

1 O Lord, Who fasted for our sake
for forty nights and days,
our wondering souls to love awake
Thy holy name to praise.
The noontide sun, the darkling night
for us didst Thou endure;
fasting didst counter Satan’s might
with word and deed most pure.
2 Give grace to use such abstinence,
our faith we may subdue
unto Thy Spirit’s influence
to subject us anew.
Thy godly motions to obey
in righteousness and peace,
to glorify Thy name alway,
let not our efforts cease.
3 Lord Jesus, Who dost live and reign
with Father, Spirit blest,
do Thou our righteousness ordain,
and sway each contrite breast,
that we may ever glorify
and honor Thy strong name,
Thou Holy Blessed Trinity,
from age to age the same.

First Sunday in Lent.

Almighty God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves; keep us both outwardly in our bodies, and inwardly in our souls; that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
